What are Codes of Practice?
Data in the Codes of Practice database consists of several different types - Codes of Practice (Australian & International), Standards (Australian & International), Australian Design Rules and 'Other'.
Codes of Practice are published documents that set out commonly agreed sets of guidelines which inform all parties of responsibilities and expectations under the code. COP can be
- voluntary agreements where a group of companies or an industry sector agree to abide by a particular code;
- quasi-regulation where the code may be developed by industry in cooperation with government; or
- co-regulation where the code describes required performance or behaviour or specify acceptable means of meeting broader performance based obligations and there are penalties for non-compliance with the code.
Voluntary agreements and quasi-regulation COP are currently outside the scope of this project.
Standards are published documents that set out specifications and procedures designed to ensure that materials, products, methods or services are fit for their purpose and consistently performs the way they were intended to.
Australian Design Rules (ADR) set out design standards for vehicle safety and emissions. They are developed through a consultative process involving government, industry, employee and consumer representatives.
'Other' requirements are items such as guidelines, specifications, rules and handbooks that are covered under legislation but do not clearly fit into one of the above categories.
About this database
The establishment of the Australian Codes of Practice Database provides businesses and other interested parties with information on Australian and International codes of practice, standards, design rules and other requirements that may impact on their business activities.
The database should assist in reducing the risks associated with non-compliance or compliance with out-of-date Codes of Practice. It will also significantly reduce the costs paid by businesses to consultants or legal advisers to identify the Codes of Practice applicable to their Activites.
The Australian Codes of Practice Database will eventually provide Codes of Practice requirements for the Commonwealth, State and Territory jurisdictions. Currently, the database contains Codes of Practice requirements for South Australia and the Northern Territory only, including descriptions of the Codes, the applicable legislation and contact information.
Codes of Practice Version 1.2 was released on 21st March 2003.
